Why go to a lesbian and Gay film Festival? Deep within our primal core, a voice speaks out to us. Echoing from some distant past, our lives require this vital energy and spirit which temps our fancies and fuels the savage desires coursing through our veins. But alak, few of us know this great need that rages within our persona. This obfuscate treasure is the wonder and comfort that are engender a sense of acknowledgement, belonging, and identity. In the gay community, we are fortunate to have the medium of film to bring these needs to life. Of course others will disagree, some of our ilk feel that they should not be divided from the mainstream heterosexual conundrum. They wish to identify themselves as part of the straight culture and celebrate the fact that their sexuality, a secret matter, is not apparent and that they can flow through the world in ambiguity and conformed peace. However, for some, this is not possible. Their very nature makes them just a bit queer. Not bad, not good, but simply atypical of the mainstream, gap clothes wearing, white picket fence, Starbucks and Jamba Juice world that surrounds them. They stick out not just in their undue social stigma but also in their intimate desires. They long for identity and the realization that they are not the only one. And so they flock to the Castro. Girls walk hand in hand with leather studded baby buggies, men can embrace and kiss with greedy abandon, transsexuals walk down the streets without harassment. The community brings belonging to our hearts. However, beyond these niceties, film brings the unseen worlds to us and challenges its viewers to explore some facet of queerness that they may not have delved in already. The play is the thing... and in it we see the deep fears and lofty aspirations of the queer community blossom in cinematic perfection. Frameline's three week gay and lesbian film festival gives voice to our community and aids in the greater social awareness of queers as well as encourages the tumultuous expression and growth of queer artists. If you ever have had any aspiration of being queer, you must come to this event. Go to the Castro Theater, Pick up a brochure and get your film tickets. Come and experience the spectrum of queer independent films and enhance your ideas of the rich diversity embodied in our community. For those that do not wish to partake in this menagerie, I have one simple word for you - pathetic. More Info - http://www.frameline.org/festival/27th/index.html |
